SSC Quant: Percentage and Ratio Revision Method

Why do percentage questions stay slow?
Percentage questions become slow when a student treats every problem as a fresh calculation. Many SSC questions use standard conversions such as 12.5 percent, 16.66 percent, 20 percent, 25 percent and 33.33 percent. If these are not automatic, the student loses time before the real reasoning begins. Revision should therefore combine concept clarity with fraction-percentage recall.
How should ratio questions be reviewed?
Ratio mistakes usually come from setting the wrong base. During review, write what the units represent before solving again. If a question compares income, expenditure and savings, do not mix the ratio of income with the ratio of savings. The report should tell whether the error came from concept setup, simplification or careless arithmetic.
What practice routine works best?
Use short sets of ten questions. Review immediately after the set and tag each wrong answer by cause. If most errors are setup errors, slow practice is needed. If setup is correct but time is high, timed calculation drills are needed. If accuracy falls only near the end, stamina and pacing are the real problems.
Worked review: successive percentage change
Suppose a value rises by 20 percent and then falls by 20 percent. Use 100 as the base. The first change gives 120; the second removes 20 percent of 120, which is 24, leaving 96. The net change is a 4 percent decrease, not zero. The important review note is that the second percentage uses a new base. The same base check prevents errors in discount, population, salary and profit questions. When a ratio is involved, write what one part represents before inserting numbers.

How to check whether the repair worked

One correct answer is not enough evidence; look for the same method to hold across several items. If the original error returns, narrow the drill further. If accuracy is stable but time remains high, keep the method and shorten the timer gradually.
