Question

Sales over four days are 40, 50, 60 and 70 units. What is the average sale?

  1. A. 50
  2. B. 55
  3. C. 60
  4. D. 65

Correct answer

Option B: 55

Add the values: 40 + 50 + 60 + 70 = 220. Divide by 4 days. The average is 55 units.

Why the other options are wrong

  • 50 ignores the higher values.
  • 60 is above the true average and may come from using only middle values incorrectly.
  • 65 is too high for the given set.

Solution method

  1. Add all observations included in the requested group.
  2. Count the observations rather than using the numerical range or the number of gaps.
  3. Divide the total by that count and check that the result lies between the smallest and largest values.

Concept boundary

An average is total divided by number of observations. It is not automatically the middle listed value, although a symmetric sequence can make the two coincide. The range is also unrelated to the divisor. In a DI set, confirm units and whether values represent days, branches, percentages or cumulative totals before averaging.

Transfer practice

The values are 30, 45, 55, 70 and 100. What is their average?

Check the transfer answer

60

The total is 300 and there are five observations, so 300 divided by 5 equals 60.

Practice tip

In DI, write total and count before selecting the option. This prevents mental averaging mistakes.
